Globalisation

Carnival in Rio
de Janeiro is a party like no other in the world
scenary of culture and tourism. It is considered
by the tour agencies the greatest spectacle on the
planet, and it is inserted as one of the most important
cultural manifestations in the world, being broadcasted
live to nearly two hundred countries and three million
homes. Besides all the repercussion, this mega spectacle
still makes reference to Samba which has in its
schools, street groups, musical groups and carnival
groups its most democratic means of expression.
Samba, as we know, has not always been the way it
is: it has reached representativity through a long
process, sometimes through fight, or seduction,
or co-operation from the old generation of sambistas
like Pixinguinha, Donga, João da Baiana,
Ismael Silva, Paulo da Portela, Cartola, Heitor
dos Prazeres, and other personalities and areas
from the Brazilian elite back then.
Nowadays, carnival in Rio de Janeiro is a synonym
of Samba and has an exceptional memory and patrimony
which needs to be rescued and preserved as well
as told. Registering its history, rescuing and mapping
the growing expansion of Samba in Brazil and the
world, Samba Global Project intends to contribute
to the valorization of Samba, which is far behind
its real importance.
